A new and fun way to learn a language

Personalized Stories

A couple years ago I asked one of my newer students how he was learning to read so fluently. He pointed me to a book of short stories that he would read in Spanish little by little every night. The book he got was filled with short stories that got progressively harder every story and highlighted hard words and provided the English translations.

Now I have always thought reading is a great way to learn a language but there is two issues I have come across.
1. Regular books are filled with complex grammar patterns and words, making entry into reading a difficult barrier for students.

2. These books of short stories didn’t really interest most of my students as the topics and genres of the story just wasn’t interesting to them.

Below is an example of one of my younger students that really likes a certain video game character I will refer to as “Bob” y “Rob”

English

“Bob” and “Rob” go on a picnic in the park. “Bob” brings a blanket and delicious food. “Rob” brings a basket full of fruits and cold drinks.

They find a spot under a big tree. “Bob” and “Rob” spread out the blanket and put the food on it. They eat sandwiches, apples, and cake.

After eating, “Bob” and “Rob” play with a ball. They run and have a lot of fun. Finally, they relax and look at the sky.

“Bob” says to “Rob”, "This is a great day for a picnic!" “Rob” smiles and replies, "Yes, it is!"
